LGBT Rights Ordinance Passed – Equality in Wilkes Barre!
You may remember that I’ve been working on an LGBT rights amendment to the human relations ordinance for Wilkes Barre with city councilwoman Beth Gilbert. Well…
WE DID IT!
The amendment to the human relations ordinance to include LGBT rights has passed!
I am extremely happy to announce that on September 15, Wilkes Barre City Council voted 5-0 for an amendment to the human relations ordinance that would grant protections to the LGBT community in Wilkes Barre.
This ordinance would make it illegal to discriminate based on sexual orientation or gender identity. You cannot fire or refuse to hire someone simply for being gay, bisexual or transgender. Nor can you evict someone from an apartment or refuse to rent to them. And then there’s public accommodations — such as bathrooms or services — which also bar discrimination.
Sorry, haters. But those are the rules.
The entirety of the council, plus one Tony George, the Mayor of Wilkes Barre, voted for this amendment. It goes into effect in a few days from now, as of this video posting, and even extends protections to women, veterans, service animals, and many, many more. Like we said all along, this wasn’t just an LGBT thing, this was a huge bill designed to protect many different groups.
The event was incredible. There were so many friends and supporters there. Several media outlets — newspapers, TV stations, the Philadelphia Gay News — all came. Lots of coverage. I invited Ted Martin, director of Equality PA, to witness. He wasn’t scheduled to speak, but we asked him if he would, and he absolutely nailed it. And, fortunately, no one really spoke against it.
I think we did a lot of good. We’re going to be able to help so many people, with this. It felt really good to see this pass after working on it for nearly a year. I’m so proud of my city!
Creative Dee nominated for NEPA BlogCon Vlog of the Year Award
Last thing I want to mention, today, I just found out yesterday that this vlog — yes, this vlog, right here — has been nominated for a Blog of the Year Award!
(It wasn’t me… I didn’t nominate it. Seriously, I had nothing to do with it.)
But, I’m going to promote it, anyway!
I mean, I think it would be ultra rad if people voted for it! Why not?
So, if you have a second, please vote Creative Dee for Vlog of the Year!
NEPA BlogCon is an awesome annual event organized by several other bloggers local to Northeast PA to promote, discuss and celebrate blogging in its many forms. It’s such an honor to be nominated, and I really appreciate every vote. So, thank you!
And that’s all folks…
